Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Project
The Sidewalk Project is a combined effort between the City of Valley Springs and the South Dakota Department of Transportation and is being funded by a Transportation Alternatives Grant the city was given to increase safety in and around the City of Valley Springs, specifically for children walking to school as part of the Safe Routes to School Project.
This project began in 2023 and is set to conclude in October 2026.
For a breakdown of the timeline for this project, please click on the attachment below from the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
Railroad Returning to Valley Springs
Valley Springs will once again have an active railroad running through town. Currently, there is no projected date from the railroad company for when it will be operational, but you may see workers clearing brush, updating sections, and grading. The commissioners have worked with the railroad company to have safety measures (signage, painted symbols on the roadway, lights, etc.) at two of the major intersections, Valley Drive and Dunham Street.
For updates on this project, attend the monthly Commission Meetings or check back here for updates.
Sunnyside Ave Water/Sewer Line Update
The City of Valley Springs is set to update the sewer/water lines along Sunnyside Ave in Spring/Summer 2027.
The City Engineer is currently finalizing a plan for the project, and there will be an Open House held for all Sunnyside Ave residents (tentatively slotted for November 2026) where the plans will be shared and questions will be answered, including parking, how long disruptions may last, and the current conditions of the sewer/water lines.
For the most up-to-date information, please attend the City's regularly scheduled Commission Meetings (held the second Tuesday of each month at 6 PM), read the Meeting Minutes on the City's website, or call the City.
